Writers love to talk about themselves, which is why so many fictional characters are writers.
Frisco Del Rosario can go on about himself endlessly, when he thinks it adds color or credence to the piece at hand. He writes about chess, sometimes well. He dislikes building “about” pages, social media profiles, and referring to himself in the third person.
He’s an ink-stained journalist who’s been writing sports since the 1980 Winter Olympics. He was introduced to women’s basketball when one of his chess club cronies in 1977 was a post on the Cal State Hayward men’s team, and the men and women mostly played doubleheaders. His favorite players on that CSUH women’s team were Cathy Sulinski, who threw Olympic javelin; and Janice Knudsen, who became a top basketball official in the region.
