Cars and school buses

When I put my mind to avoiding spoilage of movie endings, sports scores, or news items, I can. Something happened within the University of Utah athletics department. It’s days-old, stale news, but I’m waiting for Coach Roberts to tell me about the car — or cars. Utah’s Crimson Collective — how that’s separate from the […]

Worst case, part one

Utah 74St. Joseph’s 48 Revisit the LaLooshian exchange in which media says: “In the absence of one of your best players, who needs to step up?”, and then the coach tries not to roll eyes before replying: “They all do”. In the case of the Utah women’s basketball team, stepping up to fill a Gianna […]

Games of 11/30 and 12/1

Hooboy, I’m more tired than usual. Fell asleep during Oregon at Portland, and Pacific at Arizona State. I’m not sure why. Some writers exert themselves in harrowing adventure, or running through airports. I sit on my butt, fueled with coffee and Spindrift. Advent of Code started, and that’s hard on my brain, because I’m not […]

Washington 81 Pacific 64

Washington was one of the Pacific-12’s tougher representatives at the last NCAA tournament. The Huskies burst at the end, after a poor first-half in conference play. Washington looked really good vs. Pacific. I thought it could be acceptable for Washington if they play at least this well through non-conference play. The Huskies were better than […]

Santa Clara 77 Gonzaga 72

Santa Clara beat Gonzaga 77-72 Thursday at the Leavey Center. It was Gonzaga’s first conference loss of the season, and SCU’s first win over Gonzaga in seven years. Brynna Maxwell made her first five 3-point attempts, but the last two were both blocked during the game’s final minute.

Here, Bulldogs

West Coast Conference leader Gonzaga visits San Francisco and Santa Clara this week. I think I should go to at least one of those games, because I’ve never actually seen Brynna Maxwell set a gym on fire. I’m a little amused that she almost surely wouldn’t know me on sight (same with Kemery Martin at […]

Brynna Maxwell forms a personal subchapter of the 1800 Club

Among the trivial performance measures to amuse me over the years is the notion that if you sum a player’s FG%, 3FG%, and FT%, then multiply by 1000, and get a result of 1800 or better, you’ve got an excellent shooter. In other words, a player recording .500, .400, and .900 can shoot it. If […]

Brynna Maxwell is the West Coast Conference player of the week

West Coast Conference player of the week Brynna Maxwell leads the nation in 3FG% by a mile. The perimeter defense in the West Coast Conference suits her. Whether you sense me smirking with that observation is up to you. Love that kid, one of the purest shooters I’ve seen, but I’m somewhat disappointed in her […]

Three lackluster games

I said Arizona 72 Oregon St. 69 on Jan. 6 figured to be one of the best games I’d see all year, but that had to be crazy. It was the first game of the season for me, and this is the mighty Pacific-12, where an instant classic is born every two hours. The games […]
